Dear Family & Friends.
This week has been great! Not just because my birthday was on Saturday, but some other great things happened this week too!
Monday: We didn't do a lot today. We spent most of the day at a less active member's house, frying catfish and shooting the breeze with him. He lives far away from Rolla, and he is super lonely. He got back from a surgery where they fused some of the vertebrae in his back together. He's been in a lot of pain recently and he is really happy whenever we go see him. He was really happy to see us, we might go fishing with him sometime soon.
Tuesday: Today we got a new Investigator! His name is T, and he is really excited to learn about the Gospel. He is planning on coming to church this Sunday, so we are praying that he will!
Wednesday: Today I went with Elder W to St Roberts for companionship exchange. We were in Fort Leonard Wood for most of the day, and I got to talk to a lot of Army Personnel. I had a blast standing next to them and being at least 6 inches taller than most! I had a blast arm wrestling a guy and winning! I guess it's because we go weight lifting every morning. Hopefully, I can work off the excess fat I've built up over the past 3 months!
Thursday: We did service for some less active members for most of the day. I worked up quite a sweat, even though it was only 80 degrees. We did some weed whacking at a farm, and then moved a trailer-full of wood into someones house. We ended the day by going to Salem, and practicing the song that we are going to sing for Zone Conference on the 20th. The Salem Elders and Elder D& I are going to be singing "Brightly Beams Our Fathers Mercy" as a Quartet. I am so excited for this opportunity!
Friday: We went to a retirement home and did some crossword puzzles with the elderly folk. I was tired that day, and I kept stumbling over my words. But I made the old people laugh cuz I said some really dumb things. I was super embarrassed, but at least I brought some light into their lives!
Saturday: It was my Birthday! Elder D was really cool and took me to Waffle House for breakfast. I got some waffles and some bacon, which made a wonderfully delicious start to an incredible day!
We went to Meramec Springs with a wonderful part-member family, and walked along the river looking for snakes. It had rained earlier and there was a cool fog hanging around the river. I was unable to find any snakes, but I caught a fish with my bare hands!
We had dinner at a member's house, and had some brownies for dessert. We played some games after dinner and that was it. All in all, it was a great first Birthday out in the mission field.
Sunday: We had 12 Investigators come to church today! 7 of them were our Chinese Investigators we've been teaching. They had a wonderful experience and most of them want to come back. But it was like a big crazy party! We had to walk some of them to their different classes, and they were all excited to be there! The Ward members really helped out by explaining things to them and being super friendly with all of the new people we brought.
T came to church too! I was so happy to see him there, and he was happier than I was! He told us that his worries and his grief (his fiancee fell down the stairs, suffered brain trauma, and died. He has been seriously depressed since the accident.) have gone away since he stepped into the church! He told us that he wants to be baptized, and he is planning on coming to church next week as well!
I love this work, and I know that God is guiding those that are ready to accept his Gospel into their lives.
I love you all, and I know that God is watching out for us.
Love, Elder Hegsted
