Dear Family & Friends,
I love being a missionary!
Monday: Elder S hadn't shaved with a razor before today, so I taught him the proper way to shave his face. He likes that his face feels, "As smooth as a baby's butt."
We didn't go Spelunking, because it was a privately owned park and we were too tired to do anything. So we ended up playing Monopoly with the Salem Elders for 3 hours. I nearly lost, but Elder S and I combined forces and created the H_S_ Empire! We beat Elder D & Elder H by a landslide. Then we had a contest on the car ride home, for who could scream the highest... and I won... After we went back to Rolla and helped a family move in. It was a great day!
At the end of the day I was about to take a shower, when I heard someone screaming in the kitchen. I wrapped a towel around me, ran out, and found *Elder S screaming at a big black spider scurrying across the counter*. Then he began screaming at me to "KILL IT!!!" I smashed the spider with my hand, and I got called a freak because I didn't use something else to kill it.
*This is not the first time this has happened. Elder S is deathly afraid of spiders. We were sitting on someone's porch and he had a spider on his leg. He saw it and starting screaming. He swatted his leg and ended up falling off of the porch. I've noticed that he seems to get at least one spider on him everyday. I usually flick it off of him before he has a conniption. I had never thought that I would end up with a companion who was as Arachnophobic as my mom.
Tuesday: We went to our dearest Hill-billy friend's house out in the middle of the nowhere, and helped him clean up around his Ranch. I chased some cows and got chased by some calves. It was pretty fun, and then we did some weeding in his garden. We ended up talking to him for 2 hours, cuz he's been having a rough time with the pain from his spinal surgery.
Wednesday: Today we had a companionship exchange with the Zone Leaders in Rolla. I stayed in Rolla and Elder W (one of the Zone Leaders) came with me. We had a great day together! We did some service for an investigator, and he accepted our invitation to be baptized! He's set to be baptized on July 27. We got a new investigator and She already wants to be baptized.
Thursday: Elder S came back today, and I'm glad he's back. We followed a referral, and found a creepy dirt road going off into the middle of nowhere. We followed it for a ways, and found a trailer. There were a bunch of chained up, snarling and barking, dogs surrounding the trailer. We wove our way around them and knocked on the trailer door. A guy opened the door and we talked with him about the Book of Mormon. He liked what we had to say, and he wants to meet with us again! Now we have another investigator!
Friday: Backstory: I got bit by a tick on Thursday 26, and I was out running. I didn't have any tweezers, so I used my fingers. I accidentally left the head in, I tried getting it out when I got back to our apartment... but I wasn't able to get it out. I forgot about it until today (about a week), and I woke up with a burning sensation on my leg. I looked at it, and I saw I had red EM rash surrounding the bite. I told the bishop, and he looked at it. He used forceps and pulled out the head. I am now on doxycyclin (antibiotics), and I've been nauseous all week.
We went to the T's house for 4th of July, and all of our Chinese investigators were there. It was a little boring until I started playing badminton with Elder S, then our Chinese investigators each wanted to have a turn playing with us. We took a break and we were drinking out of water bottles. I thought it would be funny to splash Brother C, and with water dripping down his face, he said, "Elder... You think me being wet now is funny... Wait until you is all wet!" Then we had a big all out water fight! It was awesome!
Saturday: Nothing interesting happened
Sunday: All of our Chinese investigators came to church, and they took up an entire row! This is their first time! I'm so happy they decided to do this! I know that the more they come to church, the closer they will become to Heavenly Father.
We got back at the end of the day, and there were a bunch of raccoons crawling all over our Garbage cans! They didn't run away when we parked our car, or when we got out of our car, or when we got close to them. I threw some water at them, and they ran away. But they had lifted up the lid to let another raccoon inside, and they left him behind. Elder S got some great pictures of it, while I lifted up the lid. I left the lid up and it climbed out and ran away.
I love all of the animals I get to see, and that I'm able to enjoy this beautiful world that God created. Everything has been designed perfectly to exist in this world, and I am grateful to be here.
Love, Elder Hegsted
